Extreme Precipitation Monitor
Data Mining Tool
Outreach / Education
All Forecast Regions
The Extreme Precipitation Monitor displays the climatological significance of the deterministic precipitation forecasted by the Weather Prediction Center (WPC). The climatological significance is represented by Average Recurrence Intervals (ARIs) and Annual Exceedance Probabilities (AEPs) of precipitation estimates from the NOAA Atlas-14, NOAA-40 and Atlas-2. Importantly, this product allows the user to measure the climatological significance or “rarity” of the WPC precipitation forecast for all CONUS locations. For example, the WPC forecast rainfall for Matthew exceeded the 100 year average recurrence interval. Such context can motivate user response – perhaps more so than the specific value of rainfall (10 inches).
