Proposed Reformatting of the Hazardous Weather Outlook (HWO) through Hazards Simplification
Data Mining Tool
Outreach / Education
As per NWS policy (NWSI 10-517), there are two defined sections within the body of the Hazardous Weather Outlook (HWO) text product, the 1). 'Day One', and 2). 'Days Two Through Seven' section headers with, "concise non-technical terms of each hazard’s impact in a free text format" under each section. This proposed change is an proposed reformatting of the HWO text product that follows the Hazards Simplification’s (Haz Simp) standardized, "WHAT, WHEN, WHERE" bulletized information parsing format with an optional, "ADDITIONAL DETAILS…" section and the required Spotter Information/Activation section at the end of the product. Additionally, this change proposes the removal the 1). ".Day One" and 2). ".Days Two Through Seven" section headers, to prevent possible duplication of information between the two sections and shorten the overall length of the product to one main body section with the above Haz Simp informational bullets. During a public comment period, the 'legacy' (current) HWO will be compared side-by-side with an HWO product containing these proposed modifications. During this prototype period, the product will be generated and disseminated by two Western Region WFOs: Billings, MT - BYZ , and Glasgow, MT - GGW . Eventual implementation is intended to be nationwide.
